Frequently Asked Questions
Answers about how the practice works, grouped by who is asking. If your question is not covered here, contact us directly.
For owners
- How does an engagement start?
- With a confidential conversation about the vessel and the decision you need to make. Before any work begins, we issue a written scope stating what will be inspected, managed, or reviewed, and what will not.
- Will details of my vessel or project ever be made public?
- No. Client identities, vessels, and project details are never published or shared without your written approval.
- How do I receive reports and documents?
- Reports, photographs, and documents are delivered directly to you in electronic form. The written scope for each engagement states what is delivered and when.
- Where do you work?
- MARITEC is based in the United States; international engagements are considered by arrangement. Availability for a specific location and date is confirmed during the initial consultation.
For buyers
- Do you sell yachts or take commissions?
- No. MARITEC does not sell yachts, broker transactions, or accept commissions from builders, yards, or vendors.
- What does a pre-purchase survey include?
- The scope is agreed in writing before the survey. It typically covers the hull, structure, machinery, and systems as accessible, sea-trial observation where arranged, and a written report with photographs, priorities, and recommendations.
- Can you review a survey report someone else produced?
- Yes. Under acquisition consulting we review specifications, survey reports, and technical documentation on the buyer's behalf and explain what the findings mean for the purchase decision.
- What is the surveyor's background?
- Troy Seiber has worked in the yacht industry since the mid-1990s as captain, engineer, project manager, and owner's representative. Credentials relevant to a specific engagement are stated in the written proposal.
For brokers
- How do you work with brokers?
- We provide the independent technical part of a transaction: surveys, report interpretation, and buyer-side due diligence. The broker manages the commercial side. We do not represent sellers or broker transactions.
- How quickly can a survey be scheduled?
- Scheduling depends on the vessel's location, haul-out and yard availability, and the agreed scope. We confirm realistic dates during the initial consultation.
- Who receives the survey report?
- Only the client who engages us. The report is not shared with brokers, sellers, or any other party unless the client authorizes it in writing.
For crew
- Are you a crew-placement or employment agency?
- No. Within yacht-management engagements we advise owners and captains on technical hiring decisions. The employment relationship is always between the crew member and the vessel.
